Discover Lake Norman: North Carolina’s Largest Man-Made Lake
The Story Behind Lake Norman: From Vision to Power
Lake Norman, located just north of Charlotte, is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, with more than 520 miles of shoreline and over 32,510 acres of surface area. It was created between 1959 and 1964 as part of Duke Energy’s ambitious hydroelectric project.
At the heart of this effort is the Cowans Ford Dam, built on the Catawba River to generate electricity, provide flood control, and support the region’s growing water needs. The lake is named after Norman Atwater Cocke, a former president of Duke Power.
When the dam was completed in 1963, the resulting reservoir transformed the surrounding region—submerging entire communities, rural roads, farms, and even a Revolutionary War battlefield from 1781. These submerged relics remain a hauntingly beautiful part of Lake Norman’s identity.
Adjacent to the dam is the McGuire Nuclear Station, which began operating in the early 1980s. The facility produces carbon-free electricity and uses water from Lake Norman for its cooling system. Together, the dam and nuclear plant continue to play a vital role in powering North Carolina.
